It's a question of balance, Hawker is right, that most people will choose leadership. So I don't think it will very interesting to have very strong army at the begining and defeat all enemies just in one turn. During the game you wiil be able to gain enough leadership to play comfortable

IMO that can be balanced with numbers. Don't know if I'm nostalgic or not but I feel something is missing, picking up treasures is a bit blank now gameplay wise. Not a major concern though.

Depends on how much leadership was offered in relation to the gold. If it was say 10% (1000g or 10 leader) I'd lean toward the gold most times.

Doesnt matter now anyways, it isnt in. The game still plays great without it.

The leadership thing is completely understandable. It would be way to easy for say a mage to get a huge leadership as would it be for a knight to get an enormous one early on. I think random goodies is just fine.

If the bonus types are fixed, it'll be harder to unbalance the game, which is a plus in my book. And since gold isn't a hard limit on the number of troops you can have, leadership is clearly preferable. If you had to pay upkeep for your troops, then that choice might've been a more interesting one.
