I feel vaguely tempted to install the IL2 beta, just for the trip down memory lane. Assuming it would work on W7-64.

I think IL-2 had some expectations on it but it really was a surprise how good it really was (sense of speed/flight) compared to other sims at the time. Therefore I think we had extremely high expectations this time around BUT plz have a look at the reviews of IL-2 Sturmovik 1.0 and compare them to the CloD reviews so far. Example below, two different reviewers yes but still:
