if you have a card that isnt made by nvidia such as like Radeon or XFX compared with ATI, can you still use the drivers or are the days of universal drivers gone?

sorry i ment Nvidia, I'm asking because my friend has a GeForce 9400GT but I think its one of the copy type versions, so he couldnt use an Nvidia driver with his?
