I don't really think the engine on that bike is a Merlin

Another common engine that is mistakenly referred to as "Merlin" but only looks like one is the Rolls-Royce Meteor, which was the "ground" version of the Merlin, produced for tanks and that had cast pistons (!!!) and lower grade components.
