It allows you to keep the nose low as you do not need an angle of attack as high as without using flaps because more lift is generated at the same speed then if you did not extend them, therefore allowing you to see more clearly the runway on approach. They also lower the stall speed by about 10kts. You want to land at about 10 kts higher than stall, and the lower your speed the less dangerous it is once you have touched down.
