Anson is as Anson does.. (An old RAF joke!).

From the 16th Century proverb:-

'Handsome is as handsome does'.

A person's good actions, rather than his outward appeal, define his handsomeness in the eyes of others.

In other words, the Anson was not handsome, but had good actions.
