It only opens a bonus place.

You can sell it in one of main castles. Human - gives gold, Gnome - artifact, Elves - 10 runes of each type

You get the map of Farndor if you complete the obelisk quest and get into the pyramid. I sold it at the Dwarf king nearby and he gave me a Mithril vest (+8 Defense) The runes would have been nice also.
