It doesn't look immediately enlightening to me, but maybe there is another system call that is likely to have some useful info?

It doesnt look like it from the dump but, did you test loading missions when you tried strace?

Try loading missions both ways, then a second time from the file chooser. Then look in the output from strace, if the open path for the .mis file differs.
