P-39 performance after engine damage

I have talked about this on other thread, a few planes in the game lack a 3D damage model, among those is the P-39 and Ju-87 families.
In these planes internal systems damage is calculated at random when a bullet hits the fuselage.

So would I be right in believing that for such aircraft that,
Fuselage hit + no engine damage can = smoking engine ?

Maybe. White smoke might indicate a coolant leak or minor damage to the engine that doesn't result in noticeable power drop. A TD member would have to look at the code and figure out exactly what's going on.
