For that matter, you can do that with items, skills, and spells.

You know, there's an even easier way if you're restarting: Just edit WIFES.TXT and remove all the kids from the wife's baby list except for the 4 that you want! Remember, you didn't hear that from me, though...

Your way is a good way to try out different kids if you're already in game though, but this all sounds a bit like Gattaca to me...
