Just reloaded a save game from 3 weeks ago... as you can see the silver rapier can be upgraded to a nice level 4 sword, with energy decreasing with every fight... when the energy reaches 0, the ray of light is downgraded to the silver rapier again...
I even think I saw a post around here about how difficult the fight was to upgrade that item, compared to other level 2 upgradable items... Just added the screenshot to show the "no option to upgrade" issue...
