Regarding hit sounds - we found with the last patch (RC2) that if you set the in-game volume to maximum and then in windows decrease the volume for CLoD you can hear hit sounds.

To do this, after setting in-game volume to max, alt tab to windows, right click on the speaker icon in bottom right hand of windows task bar and open volume mixer, scroll right and decrease CLoD volume to a non deafening level. Alternatively, go to control panel, hardware and sound, sound, adjust system volume, again scroll right to find CLoD and decrease CLoD volume in windows.
