They were the ones who made the first strike on the English Home Chain stations (Dover, Rye, Pevensy and Dunkirk) which proved to the Luftwaffe that deep strikes in england were possible and the radar system could be "blinded" and that Adlertag could be launched. As someone mentioned before they were a specialist unit like Lehrgeschwader 2.

"Erprobungsgruppe" means testing or proving Gruppe.

They became another unit after the Batttle of Britian.
