Its been often rumored that Sukhoi's poor safety record in the 70's and 80's was partly due to the old Soviet regimes habit of shooting down hijacked civilian planes and blaming it on systems failure or pilot error.

Seems unlikely this time though.

Looks like they located the jet on the side of a mountain, at this stage no survivors have been sited.

the Italian participation is just for the international marketing, I doubt they told them "fly it into a mountain, that'll help sales!!"

The construction is completely Russian, whilst the engines are built by a Russian-French joint venture.
