Just curious on dasstuka's CPU choice ...

Have the AMD CPU's come of age or do they still lag compared to Intel.

Default re cpu

I have not actually fired up the new system as I am waiting on cash reserves to get the 450 + dollars for the video card .

According to the research I did on the net the 8 core AMD Zambezi is a tad behind intel cause most present day games cant utilize the extra 4 cores . But I hope that will change in the near future.

Dasstuka
most games still cant utilize the extra 7 cores, never mind 4... each individual core is slower than any of the intel processors in the same price range

I would prefer the hd 7970 over the gtx 680 at any time. I am running it too and for a game like clod, a card with large ram is always a better solution to run it fully stable. In my setup, the card uses up to 2,7 GB ram, which isn't possible for the gtx680.

Although Iwas positively surprised from the performance of the gtx 680, I think of some major disadvantages in my eyes.

1.) not enough ram (the 4GB version will be extremely expensive).
2.) missing gpgpu units or abilities by far not up to date (the card is a quickly released and not fully featured fanboy catcher, although it runs very good).
3.) the bios is not able or was not able to provide u with all feature. I think of a fanboy, who wrote, that this card is fast as hell with its pci-e 3.0 (?) support and that this makes the top edge. But he was stopped by some guys, that found out, that the 3.0 support cannot be activated, although they already had the suitable mainboards for it. (correct me, if I am wrong with this in the meantime).

I cannot say, that this is the wrong card, as I am somehow also a nvidia guy and had my problems with the catalyst and its quality at the release of the 7970. In the meantime, some issues concerning the bad shadow drawing by ati is solved (i had really bad dynamic shadows with older catalysts until 12.4 and also wondered, why nobody saw it, although their videos showed the same issues, e.g. in BF3).

Last but not least I think, that the upcoming big kepker will have all features and will hit ati hard. But they will also have some value to buy it.

For my upcoming 27" triple monitor setup, there is no doubt, that the ati will perform way better than on low resolution 1080p!!! We had more resolution 10 years ago!!

Oooooomg, so this is really telling me, that I made quite a good choice on my 7970!!!

But there will again be sone kids, who will run such cards in triple sli or something.

I see it in front of my mind: A youtube video with a 17 year old boy getting this card from his rich parents. He is crying out loud, whining and whistle something with"battlefield and 200 fps" and that he will be king. After the first shock, he holds up the gpu and start jumping around. And because he never went outside to do some sport, he is struggling with his movements, fall down and break apart the card in his face with massive injuries.

Downloadable on youtube under: "Epic xmas face plant into his new gtx 690!" ....do not ask, what drugs I have taken to write that bullsh*t ....

Strangely, CloD is the only game I have tested that loads all eight cores – one at around 80%, one at 50% and six at around 40%. It’s also the only one that currently runs at a lower frame rate than it did on my previous Phenom 965, although this is only evident when using the Black Death track as a benchmark. The actual game performance is subjectively a lot smoother, with almost no stutters, which gives the impression of a higher frame rate.
