I suspect with those glitches, either your vid card can't handle the settings, you need to update drivers, or you're cooking your video card. I had a card that did stuff similar to what you're showing in a different game. After a bit of testing, I found it was running at over 95C under the loads I was putting it through. Needless to say, it didn't last very long that way (a few days). I was getting half of a screen being displayed, rest black, wierd artifacts, then stuff that looked like old ascii code being transposed on screen (looked kinda matrix meets stargate). I was simply pushing the card too hard.
Pretty sure -- I double checked with dxdiag:

---------------
Display Devices
---------------
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce 9800 GT
...
Display Memory: 4069 MB

I think I might need to revert to the older drivers -- the frame rate was quite good initially.

I am afraid the Geforce 9800GT has only 512Mb VRAM on it.

I am afraid that it will be difficult to pay the game with high graphics settings and many airplanes around you but it will be enough to gain an experience on the graphics, complexity and damage detail.

The Spitfie IIa is a little bit "unrealistc" (the absolute über-plane) most of us know that and we are waiting for it to be fixedin the next updates.

Still nice screenshots! And story to go with it

Some tips:
Disable Anthropomorphic control - it is not working as well as it should
Before starting using Complex Engine Management, look the videos in Youtube explaining how to start an engine (and warm it up before take off). It will spare you endless frustration moments...

This game is merciless with noobs and low end video cards. Your 2008, cheap 512MB video card is not enough, as simple as that.

Dxdiag tells you the total memory the video card is using, i.e. including not only the total video memory but also the shared system memory.

To see your 512MB of VRAM you should go to the advanced display properties, by right clicking the desktop etc.

Cheers!

Ah - thanks all, but it looks like the 9800 is on the supported list, or am I misreading that too?

True but you are far from recommended specs of 1 GB of VRAM, mate. No wonder that you have issues if you push too much the resolution, textures quality, shading and object density.

This and similar arguments have been made and had on this forum over and over and over, i.e. I meet the min specs, so why does the game run like it does ?
It was clearly stated in the manual and other posts on this forum that users will be able to run the game but only with details turned way down which will make the game look worse than an early 90's flight sim.
Win7 64bit is recommended (yeah another word for "must have"), but at least you have vista 64bit.
Seroiusly buy a better card, mine is not the latest and greatest either but I have no issues running the game and by now it is possible to pick up one at a very low price, though if I had to buy a new one and could afford it I'd go for nvidia gtx560 and up, maybe with more than 1.2gb of vram.

Plus there are many discussions here about performance, a lot of helpful tips and posts, though I am convinced that upgrading your card will let you enjoy the sim in a much better way.
There are also a lot of tutorial videos available, especially about startup procedures for various planes. I agree, the manual could have been much better, but a little bit of looking and reading around will get you in the pilot's seat successfully.

Good luck .

Well, thank you again.

I can't justify spending a whole lot of cash on a video card right now, but I ordered a GTX 550 Ti; we'll see how that does.

^ I have that same card, runs the game decent.

I also use it with a AMD phenom II x4 965 BE ~ 3.4 ghz

I think that 2.8 may hold you back some as well....?
