I am not 100% sure.. those who know for sure correct me if I am wrong, but you need 2x vid cards because most vid cards only have 2x DVI outputs

Thus to drive 3x monitors you need 3x DVI outputs, having 2x vid cards gives you 4x DVI outputs

Some of the newere cards have an HDMI output too.. So 'if' that can be used by the NVIDIA surround than you could drive 3x monitors using 1x video card
