You need to mod Oblivion to get a respectable game, it can be pretty awesome but it's hard to do.
I had 94 mods (Including three major overhauls and elements of two others combined with FCOM running through Wryebash) and it made Oblivion waaaay better than the stock version which was pretty dull. Skyrim does look like the business though, can't wait to upgrade so I can play it.
