Simple Answer: Remember Master and Commander by Peter Weir? Perfectly done, historically accurate to the last detail, beautiful pictures, and no love story at all - the only female actor in the whole film had a silent 20 second appearance (effecting a really nice whistful look of Russel Crowe)...

And what happend? It flopped at the box office, that's what. A pity, but it is the answer to your question.
