Getting a bigger monitor is one thing, running your games at a bigger resolution is another thing.
Take an old 15" monitor: normal res for gaming 800x600
Take a bigger 21" monitor: res for gaming 1600x1200
A lot of people think that it doubles the resolution but in fact the resolution quadrupled. You can get 4 800x600 screens into 1 1600x1200.

This also means that your CPU/GPU has to be a lot more powerfull to put out the same performance to fill that bigger screen.

I know that back then, my computers always struggled to get me a decent 1600x1200 FPS.

If you go for 1920x1200 monitor, you go even bigger then 1600x1200 and therefore need even more CPU/GPU power to match that same performance.

You could always turn down the res to crack up performance but LCD images look poor when not viewed on the native res.

LCD's then have another problem because there is more stutter noticable if your FPS below it's refreshrate when you have VSync on (on CRT's this is almost not noticable due to motion blur).

But then... if you compare the image quality from an LCD/LED monitor to an old CRT... LCD's are top notch...
