I think the main reasons people don't fly online much can be easily summarized as follows:
1) Servers getting logged off by Steam.
2) Sound bug.
3) Not enough people know their way around the FMB and scripts.

Very good take on things.
Just this morning I managed to take Ataros signature script and get it to work loading sub missions in a single player mode. It worked a treat! Unfortunately it all comes down to time. It took me a month to find a quiet half hour to sit down and walk through the steps
