Pretty much how i view the current situation. Sure, there's a lot of problems with CoD and even my most expected feature (CEM) seems a bit weird or in need of some tweaking, but after flying CoD i just can't go back to IL2-style CEM. It was fine for its time, but it seems too simplistic after flying CoD.
This might be a bit hazy now, but it will become very interesting in later expansions with late-war hotrod fighters.
I could fly blue and be outperformed at 30000ft by pretty much any allied fighter but i'll have a fully automatic ride with big guns, or i can fly red and have the best performing fighters with smaller guns and completely manual engine management that terribly adds to the workload (mixture, prop pitch, throttle, turbocharger, intercoolers, oil coolers, radiators/cowl flaps).
Interestingly enough, the situation is reversed in the early war planesets where the axis usually has the performance advantage (constant speed props or two-stage props on allied aircraft vs fully manual pitch control on luftwaffe aircraft), so we end up with a more balanced sim without having to compromise accuracy to artificially balance it, in fact it's more accurate with the new CEM.
In IL2 every aircraft was more or less similar and with far less controls needed (even if they are there, there's no real penalty for not using them correctly), which ends up favoring the best performing aircraft in each case (blue for early war, red for late war).
After flying CoD and having to work for that extra performance i just can't go back to IL2. It's still on my hard-drive, but i haven't touched it once since installing CoD.
