In the good old days the memory bandwidth was such a problem that higher resolutions caused massive drops in fps, but in the top of the line cards today the loss is really not that bad which can been seen in the review below (using 4x AA - none of the cards are even close to halving their fps when going up a "notch" in resolution from 1680x1050 to 1920x1200 - not even the budget cards):
