There was an issue with different DLL, if I remember correctly. Try this:
Before you install 4.09m, save following files from 4.08m (can be found in main game folder): il2_core.dll il2_corep4.dll mg_snd.dll mg_snd_sse.dll After installing 4.09m copy these files back into the mainfolder and overwrite existing ones. Tell us pls, if it worked or not. EDIT: BTW... did you usually need the DVD to be inserted to start the game?
