Also, for those that haven't been close to what japanese animation has to offer, this is probably the nicest stuff I've even seen regarding to WW2 dogfights / pilot story (very fictionous also).

You can find the film in DVD with english subtitles easily on amazon, and I recommend the french version for those who speak french, because the main character is perfectly dubbed by Jean Reno.

Well the series The Cockpit by Reiji Matsumoto is a bit older than that, it came out in 1971. There are also three parts, one about a Ohka pilot, one about a FW190 D pilot and one about a infantry man in the Philipines who drives his final race on a motorbike. On that last part you especially see it is from the seventies as the main character looks more like a hippie than a soldier. Your mentioned date is the release date for the US-version not the Japanese one.

Matsumoto had his big break with Otoko Oidon, a series that chronicled the life of a rōnin (a young man who was preparing himself for entrance examinations to universities and colleges), in 1971. Around the same time he started a series of unconnected short stories set during World War II, Senjo Manga Series, which would eventually become popular under the title The Cockpit.

Interesting stuff, while we're on this subject I would like to make a contribution. Sky Crawlers, from the guy behind the well known anime movie Ghost in the Shell wich I'm sure you've heard of/seen. It's all fictional but good nontheless.

I read somewhere "Paths of Hate" had premiered at a film show in Warsaw about 2 weeks ago.

Is a short film though, not a full length feature.

Ah yes, I had forgotten Sky Crawlers.
I'll try to find some onther animes / CG films that feature 1930's-1950's planes.

First thought : Zipang, but it's more a king of "Nimitz film" on the japanese point of view.

Interesting. I have a comic book made by Hugault. It tells about a FW 190 pilot too. He has the same problem: He's fighting on the wrong side. (But no atomic bomb)

Well comic books there is a lot.

Here in France there is something like a new one every month about planes (covering all eras) but in terms of quality it isn't as nicely done as japanese anime (mostly the story).
