yeah nohudlog=1 turns off all messages. Editing the hud_log_xxx.properties for each country changes what RHS hudlog messages appear allowing you for example to keep radiator messages but delete landing gear ones.

You can do the same with chat, instead of turning CHAT off completely edit the hud_msg_xxx for each country and remove the chat you do not want to appear (hud_msg is english, hud_msg_de is german etc).

An alternative for chat is to turn it off completely and replace the sound files for for languages you do not understand with your own language. Thus for example an Englsih Speaker flying for the LW can hear messages in English and no longer needs teh Chat translations.
