Even the 75mm KWK was a very effective gun used on later models of Panzer IV and Panther for example. A former member of LLv34 had a grandparent that was a tanker in East front and according to him the problem was not killing the Russian tanks but the amount of them rushing at you.

As of land combat in IL-2, it has a ton of flaws..with tanks having tracking speed of a modern Abrams, not being destroyed by a 500kg bomb landing next to them etc.
I actually did manage to destroy one T34/76 with a 500kg bomb by landing it very close at the front of the tank, maybe 3 meters or so. I was surprised to see it destroyed and glad to have made the track to see how I had managed it. It was the only time I had ever killed a tank with a bf 109. I was using mods so I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

S!

Got the early KWK 88 numbers wrong, sorry Igo The 88mm penetrated ALL allied tanks, both western and eastern makes. The Germans had very good optics on their tanks, which made a difference especially in East. IMO Panther was the best tank of WW2 as it had high power main gun and wide tracks, sloped armor and good speed.

About a 500kg bomb exploding next to a tank. The blast alone would tip the tank over or damage it and shock of the blast could kill the crew or severely hurt them making the tank useless. Well, IL-2 is old and SoW for sure has a better DM for gound units

But how near is near? It's very difficult to get a hit on a tank with a bomb, so a really near miss is unlikely too (though more likely than a hit).

3 metres as above might do it, but 10 metres? Unlikely I'd have thought.
