The axe quest - bugged?

I did not use resurrection or anything like that. I took another look after I wrote the original post, and saw that lots of assasins were dead too. Since I have been burned by taking this quest too early before, I waited until I had a very strong army and totally dominated the battle. Therefore I finished the battle fast and lost almost nothing (until I saw the battle report and discovered that lots of my army was killed).
