I played Starsiege: Tribes against the dev team.

They all, mostly, sucked at the game.

yeah, it seems in most cases the players are a lot better than the devs.

I remember a Burnout Paradise "Challenge the devs" time trial contest and the players absolutely slaughtered the devs best times.

Maybe Gaijin will provide some real competition though. Not for me however, I haven't played nearly enough of this game to be considered one of the "aces".

How do you know the devs aren't playing under a secret identity?

I know Warhawk had in-game mod-spies.

When Motor Storm was released, every track in Time Attack had the best times of all the beta testers, they were all easy to beat
