I was in the same boat, and only took the plunge after the hotfix was released as I was intrigued by what I was reading (
plus the ATAG beta-patch-hotfix server always had loads of people on it).
I havent bothered to compare FPS, but I will say that the game looks so much nicer for me, plus the biggest improvement is how much better/easier it is to spot planes and identify as friend or foe at a further distance.
Game runs smooth for me, but it did on before I installed the beta patch + hotfix.
There are however some graphical issues (seeing runway taxi lights via the cockpit) and sometimes the mirror pops up even when its disabled. Enjoying the game alot more now (plus I dont get a memory leak that caused my game to stutter to a crash).
