Lots of tools to do it are available on the net. Microsoft made one called FCIV:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841290 A checksum is like a digital fingerprint. To put it simply: If two files are identical, they will have the same checksum. If they are not identical, they will not have the same checksum.
If 1C (or someone with a known-to-be-working copy) supplies a checksum of the patch, then you can check the file that you download to see if it has the same checksum: an easy way to tell if your file is corrupted or not.
