I looked at two 3D TV's at Best Buy, recently, and was not impressed. The 3D affect was made by what looked like flat cut outs of people, for instance, placed one in front of another, to make one seem closer than the other. The same was true for trees, boulders, and furniture, among other things. So, while there was what you might call "depth", it just wasn't realistic.

I decided to pass, until what I see on the screen looks like "Avatar". When the "Tree of Life" was burning, I would swear ashes were falling right in front of me.
