If you're talking about download only rather than a "disc" of some shape or form - I think you are very much mistaken.
As someone who has had numerous problems with downloaded games (steam and EAlink) I would certainly hope that publishers wouldnt perform that move.
It will also alienate a fair bit of the market as not everyone has a fast net connection or unlimited bandwidth so they would be shooting themselves in the foot to do download only.

Well there are also a lot of people (at least in Australia) that will not buy the IL2 1946 DVD because of problems with the DVD protection software interfering with other stuff on their system.

There is no ideal solution.

Ah, the Old Starforce issue? same with Silent Hunter 3 - It's easy enough to remove the drivers that installs on your system after the install.
I experienced problems with it myself with SH3 on my old PC as the DVD drive was rather old and I also have Daemon Tools installed for several Disc images (legal use) and Starforce didn;t like that!

Moving back onto topic with the release date of SOW - I would hope to see it some time in 4th Quarter 2008 but in all realistic scenarios it is going to be put back into 2009 at least - based purely on the lack of updates/ official news/website.

Not sure, but the US version uses something like "SafeDisc" which apparently is not good but not too intrusive but the Australian version of 1946 uses a Sony product called Securom (which is used by a number of other major games from various companies) which installs a root kit and is so intrusive many people refuse to purchase games that use it. To the extent that many Australians buy the US version over the internet.

Hopefully SoW will not use such stupidity.

As for the original topic, I agree 2009 at the earliest. All these "where is SOW" posts are fruitless and stupid.

September-Release is okay - but the year is wrong.

On the other hand it was announced yesterday, that UBISOFT will officially announce a game today, that was so far largely kept a secret.

And if this wasn't enough to raise some hopes: It was leaked that Knights of the Sky, now called "Age Of Flight" will be presented on the German Games Convention, starting tomorrow.
Additionally, over the last few days, a first bunch of awesome unedited ingame-screenshots was published:

But then again, UBISOFT is driving this "NO INFORMATION"-policy on a couple of games from various genres, so it could be rather anything from Anno to Assassins Creed being announced today.

But who knows....?

Wont help you much, but here you go:

According to that, we have to wait another 42 minutes until the announcement.
