Also make sure you have a decent Hard Drive, minimum 7200 rpm speed, with lots of space. Ideally two 7200rpm drives in RAID 0 config if your motherboard supports that.

Agreed, 6-8 is the sweet spot atm, 6 months ago I would of said 6 but now I would lean to 8 to be better "future proof" + ram is a cheap component that really helps performance especially if you multitask.

Have to say my best upgrade was installing a SSD drive. Made a difference over the old 7200rpm disc.
