My gramps was RAF mechanic for big Lancs with Bomber Command in England. He was French-Canadian, though his love of beer surely made the transition okay.
My great-uncle on the other hand was with the Royal Canadian Hussars an armoured regiment - though i'm pretty sure his only war wound was falling out of some frenchwoman's window. A character! |

My Grandpa was a ParaTrooper with i believe the 507 Airborne (i could be wrong, i rememebr him saying 507 and he was a paratrooper) I do know he was the first out of his plane and then it was directly hit by flak and he didnt see anyone else get out. He always had the attitude of "Ill go first to get it done" He also was in the Battle of the Bulge.

I only know of one person in my family who fought in WWII.
I never knew him, but I remember a story of how he and one other soldier survived an ambush while they were crossing a feild. He and the other soldier ran into a barn filled to the ceiling in potatoes and after digging their way through the potatoes, they discovered that it was a German hideout and stayed in the loft of the barn for four days while German troops conspired below them. At least they had something to eat! |
