I had hoped to hear from someone local to give me a local insight into ping/lag/connection issues and to encourage me that it's worth going through the set up process.

No problem though if that doesn't happen. I've been very content with single player mode for about 12 years, so I'll still enjoy it some more, especially with 4.14 coming soon!

I'll keep your suggestions in mind though.
