I tried down sampling, but it's a complete frame rate killer. Since I don't think CoD handles SLI I don't know how you could send out a higher than 1080p signal from a single card.

I'm running now a Dell U2713H @2560x1440. The monitor I have is not great for gaming as it has pretty slow refresh rate, but is awesome for other stuff.
Gaming at this resolution will require a powerful graphics card with a lot of Video Memory!

I have a GTX590 and is not good enough for that resolution. I have 3GB of video ram, but since the graphics card is dual GPU unit, it divides the memory into two 1.5GB, one dedicated to each GPU. The game will not see 3GB, only 1.5GB so this is a problem with my setup.
If you want to play at that resolution, get a faster monitor, the asus you mentioned above has very good reviews and I'm sure will be awesome. The video card may be a problem, but I'm sure in CLOD, runs faster than mine.

evga makes a 4gb version of the GTX 680, I wonder if that would do the job?

Can you do SLI with two differnt cards? like a 670 and 680 together?

From the review results I've seen, most single GPU cards/single card setups, except maybe the new Titan, are lacking performance at that resolution. The results in most games are going to be below 60fps. I just looked at one test review and the 4GB 680 was around 5fps better than the 2GB version, so I'm not even sure how great that would work.
For that resolution the SLI/Xfire setups and dual GPU cards are king, now that is very dependent of how well the game is optimized for SLI/Xfire.
I think for now, unless you are prepared to throw a lot of money at the computer, sticking to a lower resolution is way easier, specially for a poorly optimized game like CLOD.

No idea.

I have that exact ASUS monitor running at the res and it seems very playable to me, it varies from 25 - 60 FPS depending on whats going on, now I know 25 seems low but the trick is not to get too caught up with the FSP counter as much as looking at how smooth the game runs, and with the new team Fusion patch it is very very playable for me in all situations.

I don't quiet run at max graphics buts it's very close to it and it looks and play great. My system is very similar to yours except I'm running duel 680's with 2Gb ram each, but as other have here have said CLOD definitely doesn't make much use of SLI so I'm not making much use of em but for me personelly it still is plenty smooth both online and off.

And besides, that res is fantastic in all my other games, very much worth the upgrade

I was considering buying the same Asus monitor before I bought my GTX 670 4GB.Right now Im running the sim at max settings except ssao at 1920x1200 with excellent performance but I seriously doubt that my gpu would be enough to run the sim at 2560x1440 smoothly.Right now Im considering a 1080p 120/144hz monitor instead.

Default 2560 x 1600 Dell 30" OK w/ 2 x ATI HD6970 Xfired

This provides 4 GB of Video RAM, but CLoD never exceeds 3200 MB according to MSI Afterburner monitor. I suspect a single 7970 (3GB) would do very well. Priced at $400US and higher on internet vendors today.
30 inch monitors are pricy, but having used one, I couldn't go back to smaller screens. Shop around...
To really get this to work smoothly with CLoD, I found overclocking necessary on my I7-950 up to 4.2 MHz. This took some serious tweaking, and Hyperthreading must be off to control the temperature with air cooling. Your rig should have no problem.
Good luck!
