we are using hyper lobby but we were also trying to just connect via typing in one of our ip addresses and joining that way..

If one or both is behind a firewall you'll need to potentially open some ports or set up port forwarding. That'd be my guess.

Get the make and model of the router (for the host) and then Google port forwarding for that model. I can't remember what ports IL-2 needs to be open but Google probably would help with that too.
