I agree the new game engine was initially designed to be used for many different purposes with the ability to tweak it for those purposes. They may have decided its much more profitable and far less work to use the game engine for MMO's exclusively. That said there is still profit to be made by selling sequels, especially after the game engine is stabilized and working properly.
