I've seen that photo several times. But it looks that all the reports/pictures of "half a wing missing and flying straight" regard only a handful models of planes, namely heavy and stable ones (P47, TBD Avengers ...). I would be curious to know if swift & unstable planes (109, Spitfires, Hawker Hurricanes) would offer the same behavior, from an aerodynamic point of view. But this is a bit OT
