RAR is just like ZIP, but uses a different program. The format itself is Russian, I believe – it appeared a long time ago, before Windows 95, if my memory is correct, when ARJ was the most popular archiver
You can use 7zip (
http://www.7-zip.org/) – it is free and can unpack RARs. You can also use WinRAR, but it is Shareware and every time you'll get a reminder to register
