Mate, you almost make it sound like he's a nurse and not a flight sim developer

I think the main reasons people don't fly online much can be easily summarized as follows:

1) Servers getting logged off by Steam.
2) Sound bug.
3) Not enough people know their way around the FMB and scripts.

No matter how fast 1 and 2 get fixed, don't expect a magical upsurge in quality MP unless 3 also gets dealt with (unless we're talking about simple DF mode servers).

In other words yes, there are stuff for them to fix but if people don't try to get to grips with some C# scripting or explore some features on their own (even if documentation is provided, hands on experience is what makes a PC user competent in any specific field) most of what the sim offers will be left unrealized.

We take things like SEOW-style online wars for granted, but the truth is that some community members spent their personal free time coding those campaign engines and making those missions in the FMB, at a time and on an engine that wasn't built with that in mind to boot. Until something similar happens with CoD, MP will remain a choice between 2001 DFs or Coops a la vanilla IL2, completely not utilizing the new features.
We now have an engine that despite its problems provides more seamless integration of such features, but most people are too lazy to even read the few start-up procedures provided in the manual or use the forum search and they just repost the same questions.

I'm not complaining mind you, it takes time for these things to happen and the community to adjust to the new stuff (loads of times i've seen "bug" reports that were simple cases of people not understanding a new feature). However, it would actually be a welcome change of pace if more people were willing to tinker with the sim and explore what's there.

If i knew anything about c# i'd be working on something, since i can't i'm working on other things that i can manage with better results (community resources and FAQs mostly), a handful of other people are doing the same in other fields (mission building, skins, etc) and their efforts are very welcome and needed. However, we are not enough to "spoon-feed" the masses of people who won't experiment on their own.

If progress is slow in some regards it's the developers' fault, true, but in other fields it's also the community's fault. The notion being thrown around that the community can do no wrong and is entitled to everything on a sliver platter is just as absurd as saying the same for the developers.

I stand by this, based first and foremost on the history and development of the previous series and no amount of arguing is going to convince me otherwise: it's the developers' job to fix the tools and sandbox and provide some samples of applying them to good use, but if we want a wealth of content similar to IL2 we'll either have to go down the RoF route with payware everything so they can hire more people to do it for us while we sit on our couch, or we're gonna have to get our own hands dirty and play around ourselves with whatever existing, working features we have. I mean, for a bunch of hobbyists it's really weird that a lot of us seem like we're actually afraid of learning something new. Next thing we know, if there are still flight sims 10 years in the future people will be complaining the airplanes don't fly themselves

What i'm trying to say is that the Russian community is much more proactive in this regard than the rest of us who are mostly reactive. They have started exploring the sim and they get results. They just go "ok, this doesn't work, is there a workaround?" or "there is no workaround for this so i'll have to wait for an official patch/fix, i'll focus on another feature for now".

The result? While we usually spend our time here mostly complaining and arguing among ourselves, they are getting to grips with the new features and churning out their own basic dynamic campaigns.

The previous IL2 series didn't become such a success just because of the developers. It had a more solid foundation than CoD which helps things along immensely, but it was also driven forward by community input first and foremost.

All those free new flyable aircraft? A lot of them were modeled by community members and submitted to 1c, that's why we were getting them for free. All those campaigns and missions, static or dynamic, the skins, the mods (official or not), everything? Yup, user made.

Take a moment to think about that, compare with how we usually spend our time on this forum and either adjust your level of involvement in the sim or your expectations of it.

Very good take on things.

Just this morning I managed to take Ataros signature script and get it to work loading sub missions in a single player mode. It worked a treat! Unfortunately it all comes down to time. It took me a month to find a quiet half hour to sit down and walk through the steps )
