That´s quite historical accurate: This slow firing cannon were useless with exception of close extreme range, something like 30 to 80m. They are several testimonies of 109 pilots about of the many limitations of the cannon use. Already the E was the last 109 with cannon fixed armament in wings. All posterior versions with the much improved Mauser had the weapon mounted in the prop axe.

Also keep in mind, that the only variant we have in game, E-3, is armed with MG FF cannons. It fires rounds that are both slow flying, and not very destructive.
When the E-4 appears, with the MG FF/M cannon firing very destructive high capacity HE Mine shells, fired at considerably higher velocities, firepower and effective range will be improved.
