Looks really good to me. Sunrises/Sunsets do look different from the air than on the ground. Seen them many times (I'm a commercial pilot).

Luthier,

This looks pretty good actually but is it possible to replicate the magnifying effect of the earths' atmosphere on the visual size of the sun as it descends/rises?

eg:

That would be a first in flight sims afaik. The colours in your update look fine to me, from what I've read there's usually a lot of haze in that region during summer and it sometimes does take on a pinkish hue at dawn/dusk.

It's actually an optical illusion.

yes, that they do... the colour banding (of the clouds) above the clouds at late sunset are particularly surreal

"Red at dawn, sailor mourn - red at night, sailor delight"

red dawn = coming storm - red sunset = good weather

Never trust any photo you didn´t shot yourself...

But I tend to agree that a sunrise high in the atmosphere looks very different to the ones you see on the ground and they sometime can be really surreal. I personally would prefer an inch more orange and less pink, but I also like how it is done now and there are issues which should be dealt with more urgently.
