In tracks i've recorded where there is 'no outside view' switched on i cant use any external views when playing the track back. It's a bit of a pain as i used that a lot to learn how bad a pilot i was (am) in IL2.
If you record tracks with outside views enabled in-game it seems to work okay.

Thanks Blakduk. I have enabled outside views in the game, so that's odd. I will check, but perhaps it's another bug?

OK, so it's NOT a bug! You just need to check the box in the playback window that says 'edit views'. If you want to be able slow things down, also check the 'edit time' box.
