The film you thinking of is D.A.R.Y.L. and he was a android. I remember watching that film when I was very young because it featured the video game pole position which I used to play aswell.

I didn't clock it till after I posted, it was the colour. Thanks for the film title, only thing I really remember from that film was the blackbird sequence
