To stick with Dell:
CPU: Intel Core I7 920 GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5870 RAM: 4GB HHD: 500GB -> $1180 DELL 9000, a very high performing machine for that price. It isn't necessary for today's games though. Keep in mind that you would only stay 3-4 years 'comfortable' for the newest games on max high-res. I bought a Dell XPS 630i like three years ago. I'm very happy although the hardware temps can be high sometimes.
