Sure looks like a Stang near the cockpit. Is it some kind of kit plane - like one of them mini-Focke Wulfs?

Correct, it is derived from the Mustang. It's not a kit plane though, its a serious combat aircraft.

PA-48 Enforcer. Wikipedia knows everything. Thought it was a turboprop engine in there.
