I have the Steam version of 1946 - will it automatically update via Steam as at present it hasn't?

You have to put the download into Steam yourself. Download the patch, open up the download application and very carefully select the correct path into Steam (its under Steam Apps, then common).

All working ok for me and showing the correct version on the opening screen.
