The Spit IIa engine runs rough at low RPM’s starting at 11K and going up. It happens in a small bands between 2275 and 2350 at 12k feet and 2500 and 2600 at 17K feet. Below 16K feet if you are above or below the RPM band that causes issues the engine will run smoothly, however above 16K feet once you go below 2550 RPM the engine will not smooth out at any setting below 2550. Keeping the RPM above 2600 at altitude keeps the engine smooth, but it also gets hot from running high RPM’s
